February 16, 2013 - "Take up your cross and follow Me"

The 2013, A Day For Men VII was another outstanding event. We had over 250 men attend! There was a great line-up of speakers (in order of appearance): Gus Carlson, Bishop Felipe Estevez, Fr. Lum, and Fr. Zehler. There were several other speakers in between including "the story of Nick Gagnon", told by his mother, Suzette, about Nick's bout with cancer. Lunch again was provided and was highlighted by the world famous "Lumberjack Ribs" by Joe Butler.

(from the Diocese of St. Augustine website)

On April 27, 2011 Pope Benedict XVI named Auxiliary Bishop Felipe J. Estévez the tenth Bishop of St. Augustine. He was installed on June 2, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jacksonville.

Prior to coming to the Diocese of St. Augustine, Bishop Estévez oversaw the Archdiocese of Miami’s Ministry of Pastoral Services and Lay Apostolate, which includes youth and young adult ministry, campus ministry, rural life, family life, prison and respect life ministries, airport and seaport ministries, as well as, all the apostolic movements and lay associations.

Bishop Estévez has served in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as member of the Bishops’ Committee on Priestly Formation, the Bishops’ Subcommittee on Hispanic Affairs, Bishops’ Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church, the Ad Hoc Committee on Stewardship, The Task Force on Health Care, the Subcommittee for Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and the Committee on Migration and Refugee Services.

He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami on Nov. 21, 2003, and ordained to the episcopacy on Jan. 7, 2004.

Gus Carlson - "The narrow Road"

Gus Carlson, a retired Jacksonville Sheriffs Office (JSO) officer, told a compelling story about how he came to be the person he is. His story included a rough start in life when it was "all about himself." Several things happened during his tenure as a JSO officer that led him to change.

Fr. Donald Lum - "Tortured and Persecuted For Christ"

Fr. Lum, Chaplain for the Catholic refugees from Burma, gave an inspirational talk about how he was raised in Burma and the challenges he faced.

Fr. Steven Zehler - "Food For the Journey"

Fr. Zehler, Pastor for Resurrection Parish, ...

The Nick Gagnon Story - as told by his mother, Suzette

The Gagnon's, parishioners of Christ the King Parish, has been enduring the types of hardships that no family wants to experience. Cancer struck their son, but after many rough times, things are looking up for the Gagnon family. Suzette told a very emotional story about the onset of the cancer, the trials and tribulations during treatment, and present times. The talk was highlighted by Nick, who was seated in the church, walking down to meet his mother.

Joe Butler and his "World Famous" ribs

Joe Butler, as usual, did not dissappoint. His ribs are the best you can get! Once again, he and Ray Flott did their magic, to the delight of a few hundred guests. Ribs, chicken, pulled pork, plus all the other usual fixins that go with BBQ. Several ladies from the K'Cees brought things for a continental style breakfast and desserts to go with lunch.
